| SOCIETY SUPPORT FOR LOCAL CHARITY Children’s charity SHIPS has received a donation of over £1,750 from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation to provide camcorder equipment and new books, puzzles, games and resources for its library. SHIPS stands for Supporting Head Injured Pupils in School and works to helps youngsters who have recently returned to school after recovering from a brain injury. Although brain injuries are relatively rare, the educational effects of such injuries are not always easy to detect. SHIPS works to provide specialist training and information for teachers and other educational professionals so that they may identify a child’s individual needs and ensure they get the most from their learning experience. SHIPS is part of the North Bristol NHS Charitable Trust and works mostly within one hours travelling distance from the city, covering from Taunton to Newport and surrounding areas. Once a young person is referred to SHIPS, members of the charity visit their school and perform a classroom observation before producing a report for teachers and giving parents and teachers access to a help line. Lee Hathway, manager at Monmouth branch said: “The Charitable Foundation supports charities and good causes that are important to its members, and SHIPS was nominated by Mr John Maggs, a member at our branch. Mr Maggs’s daughter Siân works very closely with the charity, co-ordinating its activities and raising awareness for its work. “We hope that by supporting SHIPS we can help youngsters who have suffered a brain injury to get the most out of their education whilst at the same time raising awareness of the effects such an injury can have.” Posted on 17 Mar 2007
