The return to school is a great milestone in the recovery of a child after a severe brain injury, but at this point  their learning can no longer be individually tailored and the difficulties of the young person are compounded.   The pupil may sit quietly in the classroom, appearing to act like any other pupil, but underneath there are significant differences and teachers have to work hard to maximise their learning potential.  Any difficulties or damage may not initially be obvious; sometimes it is only when skills fail to develop as would be expected, that the consequences of the injury may truly be seen, and this may be many years after the injury took place.

Thankfully brain injury is relatively rare, but this means that frequently the school to which a child with an acquired brain injury (ABI) returns has no specialist knowledge about the educational effect of the injury. They may not know how to handle school re-integration after brain injury.

This is where SHIPS can help.  SHIPS supports pupils who have sustained a head injury, by observing the subtle differences in their way of learning due to the injury they have sustained, and advising teachers on appropriate ways of managing their learning.
