Training Courses

Training Courses

Who?

Training is offered for teachers of ABI pupils, in-class supporters, school managers and governors, student teachers, as part of their training, and NQTs.

How long?

Different levels of training are available, aimed at children, young people or adults. Training could take half a day or a whole day, or an introductory session would last about one hour.  We can also provide twilight training sessions for schools.  It could be  be 'off the peg' or tailored to meet your requirements.

What would it cost?

As with the other SHIPS services, there are grants available and if you have an ABI pupil in school or college, INSET would probably cost you nothing. However there is a cost to the charity, and if you would like to contribute, or find a sponsor for the service, the cost is £200 per half day, £500 per full day and £30 plus travel for a one hour awareness presentation.  As organisers of the training, you would be expected to provide the venue, any refreshments, photocopying and presentation facilities, eg powerpoint projector and screen.

If you are not involved with the SHIPS Project, but would like to attend a training session, the cost would be £50 per person, as long as there is a space available.

Brain Injury Awareness

SHIPS offers two Brain Injury Awareness sessions, one for adults and one for children or young people, tailored to the age of the participants

For adults:  A one hour presentation is offered to acquaint teachers, and others involved with children and young people who have sustained an acquired brain injury ,with the issues surrounding brain injury and education.  There will be background information about ABI, a list of websites for further support and a bibliography provided, as well as some basic advice about supporting the learning of young people after ABI.

For children and young people: Brain Injuries ..............and how to avoid them!

This interactive talk is aimed at young people, wherever they meet, in schools, youth groups or churches. It provides information about the brain and brain injuries.  It uses PowerPoint to provide interest as well as illustrate the session.  It can last between 40 minutes and 1 hour to suit the class/group.  Follow-up activities can be provided.  The cost of awareness session is free but we ask for a donation towards the work of SHIPS.  The cost to SHIPS varies according to the location, but as a general guideline we ask for £30 to £50.  You would also need to provide presentation facilities, such as an interactive whiteboard and photocopying

Off the peg course: What is ABI? How can I help?

From time to time SHIPS is asked to provide training for a school or group of schools.  This would usually be a whole day course, but could be delivered in two twilight sessions in the Bristol area.  The sessions are titled

  • What is ABI?
  • What is acquired with an ABI?
  • How can I help? Education as rehabilitation
  • Teaching and learning after ABI: Practical findings from research
  • Workshop: Classroom challenges of ABI

In the first session we cover the causes and mechanisms of injury, introduce some of the terms you may see on medical reports and look at the process of recovery.  The second session then examines the common difficulties experienced by young learners after an ABI.  In the third session we look at how teachers and others can continue the rehabilitation process once a pupil is back at school. Next we examine how the classroom may be made ABI-friendly, through choice of teaching style and provision of appropriate support, and how this could fit in with current government policies.  The course finishes with a discussion of the challenges presented by pupils with ABI and practical ways in which teaching assistants may help in the classroom.  The last session includes case studies.

Planned courses are listed below.  If you would like to attend a course but there are none suitable, please click here to contact the office.
